Old Oakville & Central Oakville Neighbourhoods

    Old Oakville/Central Oakville Location:

Central Oakville - Bordered by Lake Ontario to the South, Cornwall Road to the North; Sixteen Mile Creek to the East and Dorval Road to the West

Old Oakville – Bordered by Lake Ontario to the South, Cornwall Road to the North; Chartwell Road to the East and Sixteen Mile Creek to the West

Old Oakville & Central Oakville Area Information:

Oakville was originally founded in 1827 by William Chisholm, who purchased 960 acres of land around sixteen mile creek, creating one of Upper Canada’s first privately owned harbours.  With its roots in the shipbuilding, sawmill, gristmill and warehousing businesses, the town grew into what it has now become.  The area around Sixteen Mile creek and Lake Ontario was the area to first be populated and if you walk through these neighbourhoods today, you will still see plenty of homes that have been lovingly maintained in their historic state.

Well known for its beauty and charm, Old Oakville is centrally located along the shores of Lake Ontario.  Within walking distance is the beautiful  downtown area which boasts some of the GTA’s best restaurants and terrific shops: bakeries, gift shops, boutique clothiers, and so on.

Just outside the downtown area, along Lakeshore you will find the campus of well known Appelby College.  A private school for girls and boys from Kindergarten through high school, the campus includes several acres on the shores of Lake Ontario and looks much more like a beautiful University campus than an elementary/high school.

Just North West of the downtown core on Rebecca street is the Oakville YMCA, an absolutely fantastic family-friendly recreation centre.  In addition to child care, pre-school and summer camp programs, the Oakville YMCA has 2 pools, a fully equipped Wellness and Fitness Centre, Indoor Track, Adventure and Climbing Centre and Basketball Courts.  Many people are also inspired by the beautiful neighbourhoods and Waterfront Trails as evidenced by the number of joggers, cyclists and dog walkers that can be found enjoying the beautiful Lakeshore.  Those interested in the arts are close to the Oakville Centre of Performing Arts, which is home to a number of musical, comedy and theatre performances each year.  Oakville’s main public library branch is next door to the centre as is Oakville Centennial Pool.

    Old Oakville/Central Oakville Housing Information:

The historic downtown neighbourhoods of Old Oakville are quintessential to the beauty and charm that Oakville is so well known for.   You will however pay a steep premium to live in such a desired locale.  While many properties have been subdivided since the early days, there are still a number of prestigious estates along the Lake.  In addition, you will find a number of homes marked with historical designations and/or in historically protected areas that are regulated under different zoning requirements.

Living in Old Oakville will cost you roughly $450,000 for a detached, $200,000 for a condo apartment however property values rise quickly from there with prestigious properties close to the lake costing close to a million dollars plus.  Due to the generous lot sizes and enviable location, many homes have gone through extensive renovations or complete rebuilding.  Old Oakville and the surrounding areas are home to many executives and professionals and considered one of the richest neighbourhoods in Canada.

NOTE: Housing information varies significantly from street to street and month to month in large part due to fluctuating market conditions, desirability and demand for each home.  When it comes to moving into a new home, generalities are not enough which is why I highly encourage anyone interested in finding out specifics about the area to contact a local real estate expert who will customize a home search to suit your needs.  To find out more about my services, follow this link to my website www.lindsaywalls.com
