    Morrison Neighbourhood






    Morrison Area:

    Bordered to the South by Lake Ontario, to the North by Cornwall Road, to the West by Chartwell Drive, to the East by Maple Grove Road

    Morrison Area Information:

    Morrison is a beautiful, established neighbourhood located just east of Old Oakville.  The beautiful tree-lined streets, large lots, and proximity to the QEW and Toronto, make this a very desired part of Oakville and also its most expensive in terms of land value.  Unlike newer developments that take into account mixed use residential and commercial (ie: combination of condos, townhomes, detached homes and retail space), Morrison is comprised exclusively of detached homes with very little in the way of retail shops.  There is however a couple commercial plazas.  The first is at the corner of Maple Grove and Cornwall and contains a grocery store and other various retail shops.  The second at the corner of Trafalgar and Cornwall contains a Whole Foods, and various other retail stores.

    Despite it’s lack of commercial and residential diversity, Morrison is close to many other parts of the town which do offer great amenities.  Just to the west of Morrison is Old Oakville with its beautiful downtown strip of some of the GTA’s best restaurants and terrific shops: bakeries, gift shops, boutique clothiers and so on.  All the area’s outlined in the Old Oakville section of this site are close by, including the Oakville YMCA with it’s child care, pre-school and summer camp programs.  The YMCA also has 2 pools, a fully equipped Wellness and Fitness Centre, Indoor Track, Adventure and Climbing Centre and Basketball Courts. Those interested in the arts are close to the Oakville Centre of Performing Arts, which is home to a number of musical, comedy and other various theatre performances each year.  Oakville’s main public library branch is next door to the centre as is Oakville Centennial Pool.

    Oakville’s waterfront trail continues along Lakeshore throughout the Morrison area which is a great place to jog, bike or walk your dog.  Do not however stick just to the Waterfront trail.  Morrison has much more to offer than Lakeshore alone.  Take a stroll up any side street and you will discover charming neighbourhoods with impressive architecture and landscaping. 

    There are several small(ish) parks in the area.  While lovely, the main greenspace in the area is the incredibly beautiful  Gairloch Gardens.  Gairloch Gardens was given to the Town of Oakville in 1971 when its owner, James Gairdner passed away.  On the waterfront, the original residence remains an Art Gallery which displays work of contemporary artists.  Surrounding it are beautiful gardens and a wide stretch of land overlooking the lake.  I have many happy memories of visiting the park as a child and feeding the ducks down by the lake.  With such a stunning setting, it is no wonder that Gairloch Gardens is a favourite spot for wedding photos.

    A spring 2009 decision by the Halton District School Board is changing the elementary school boundaries in Southeast Oakville effective September 2010, effectively closing some smaller schools.  After much debate, English taught elementary school children will be attending Maple Grove Public School and French taught students will attend E.J. James school.  Both schools are undergoing renovations to accommodate the shifts in student populations.   There is also easy access to a number of private schools in the area.

    Morrison Housing Information:

    The desirability of the Morrison area has kept property values in the area high.  Detached homes start in the low $500,000’s and increase sharply all the way to $5,000,000+ for premium estates.  You can find homes in the $600,000-$800,000 range however the average housing price in the area is around the $1,500,000 mark.  Morrison exemplifies the phrase “location, location, location”.  As such, expect to pay more to live in this neighbourhood than most other neighbourhoods in the GTA (and Canada for that matter).

    The closest GO Train is the Oakville GO located off Cornwall, just west of Trafalgar.  Another closeby alternative is the Clarkson GO station in nearby Mississauga.
